What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

"Robot Suit HAL" is a cyborg-type robot that can expand and improve physical capability.

When a person attempts to move, nerve signals are sent from the brain to the muscles via motoneuron, moving the musculoskeletal system as a consequence. At this moment, very weak biosignals can be detected on the surface of the skin. "HAL" catches these signals through a sensor attached on the skin of the wearer. Based on the signals obtained, the power unit is controlled to move the joint unitedly with the wearer's muscle movement, enabling to support the wearer's daily activities. This is what we call a 'voluntary control system' that provides movement interpreting the wearer's intention from the biosignals in advance of the actual movement. Not only a 'voluntary control system' "HAL" has, but also a 'robotic autonomous control system' that provides human-like movement based on a robotic system which integrally work together with the 'autonomous control system'. "HAL" is the world's first cyborg-type robot controlled by this unique Hybrid System.

"HAL" is expected to be applied in various fields such as rehabilitation support and physical training support in medical field, ADL support for disabled people, heavy labour support at factories, and rescue support at disaster sites, as well as in the entertainment field.

PhotoSketch ou le SUPER compositing

We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition. Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.

Que peut donner un clavier en réalité augmentée?

Pour suivre la lancée sur le logiciel ARToolkit, voici un sujet assez étonnant : un clavier en réalité augmentée. Ce dernier est composé de deux marqueurs, un représentant le fameux clavier ainsi que sa petite fenêtre d’option et le second placé sur le bout de l’index que l’on peut comparer à une sorte de pointeur pour appuyer sur les touches du clavier. Sur la fenêtre d’option du clavier, on peut sélectionner soit, faire un mouvement latéral du clavier, soit en diagonal ou encore l’éloigner/l’approcher de sois. On peut même apercevoir sur ce clavier un pseudo écran ou la lettre écrite correspond à la touche qui a été appuyée.

Dans la seconde partie de la vidéo on retrouve le système similaire mais cette fois-ci avec le clavier sur le bras et une montre en réalité augmentée. Sur cette montre qui a la particularité d’afficher l’heure (je plaisantes), il y a aussi une commande servant à faire apparaitre ou disparaitre le clavier.

Chères constructeurs de claviers et de souris (dont je ne citerais pas de noms), à quand cette technologie pour nos beaux ordinateurs.

Friend of Epic Fu and general good guy Dave Seger is one of the creators of Ikea Heights, a melodrama (read: understatement) set in an Ikea store in Burbank, California. And I mean they literally film the show in an Ikea store without the store's knowledge, and with customers milling about.

They produced the show for Channel 101, the grandaddy of all funny video sites created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab that keeps on chugging along and discovering new talent.
